"Kail and Spade are life-long best friends who, after a freak pizza bagel accident that burned down their house, move to Mushroom Hill, NJ, and start a band with their new group of friends in the pursuit of partying and meeting girls. Along the way they’re faced with new jobs, bitchy ex-girlfriends, douchebag frat boys, evil record producers, and a friendship breaking series of events. Gurlz, Lunch, and Money - I LOVE being a Slacker!"

This production blog is maintained by the producers of Destroy All Slackers to document the production of the movie and give insight into what's going on behind the scenes. We'll be posting concept art, character designs, storyboards, soundbites, videos, and more through out production of the movie. We hope to use this Tumblr to create a community of fans who are excited about the movie and want to be involved. Follow us and we'll follow you back!

Did Disney/Lucasfilm Steal One of My Characters?

    image

Wow it’s been well over a year since I’ve updated this blog, and that’s for good reason. Honestly I would’ve just posted this on my personal website but the servers are temporarily down, so I’m going to post it here.

Last night I sat down at my desk to work on something when I got a Facebook message from my friend Sam telling me I had to see this character Lucasfilm had just revealed for their new Disney XD show Star Wars Rebels. I clicked the link and what I saw wasn’t any old Star Wars character, but a verbatim copy and paste of my character Spade from Destroy All Slackers. For those of you who don’t know me or don’t know what Destroy All Slackers is, last year I unsuccessfully tried to raise $75,000 via Kickstarter to make an animated movie about a group of friends from New Jersey that we’re now adapting into a comic book to be released in 2014, which I was hoping to announce later but I guess now would be a good time to announce it.

Let’s Get This Movie Made! Back Our Kickstarter!

The time has come! The first scene has been completed by the overseas animation studio, and we’re ready to prove to you guys that we have a great project on our hands.

The long and short of it is we need $150,000 to make the feature length animated movie Destroy All Slackers, most of which is already completed from voices, music, and sound effects to storyboards and character designs, now all we need is to pay the overseas animation studio to finish up what we started.

Our goal is $75,000, we chose to go with $75,000 because it’s a reasonable amount to reach and we can always pass our goal and hopefully go on to make the whole $150,000. If we just close in on our goal, we’ll still be okay as we can make the majority of the movie on $75,000.

If you like what you’ve seen so far on our blog, please, contribute to our Kickstarter and enjoy the cool incentives we’re offering. Downloads, Postcards, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Art Books, Posters, VIP packages, and tons more. If you can’t contribute yourself, then please spread the word to your friends, to me that’s just as good as backing it with cash.

We’ve come this far, Slackers, now’s the home stretch! We’re all in this together!

A Work-In-Progress of the First Scene from Destroy All Slackers

I got this back from the animation studio earlier today, and I just submitted the Kickstarter for review. Expect to see me pushing that as soon as it goes up. But here it is, the first scene of the animated movie Destroy All Slackers.

In this scene, the main character Kail is surfing the web, checkin his e-mail, seeing whats goin on in the world, when his best friend and roommate Spade comes in to offer him pizza bagels (what a good friend!). Unfortunately, Spade doesn’t know how to cook, so well… watch it and you’ll see.

I posted this on Twitter earlier, so I figured I’d put it up over here as well. Here’s 9 seconds of completed animation for Destroy All Slackers.

This is from the first scene, which will be released in full along with our Kickstarter next week.

NOTE: I know the audio sounds terrible, that’s to keep the file size low so it’s easy to send (and it’s from my phone).

Smaller Than You - The Way

Here’s another band featuring my main man Rikk Richardson, he was on saxophone and backup vocals in this group. This was one of the songs on my notorious 2010 playlist that I listened to every day while writing Destroy All Slackers. I have this weird technique I use when planning a screenplay, I usually make a playlist first that runs about 30 to 45 minutes long and it sort of gives you the flow of the movie an a shortened sense, then I write to that playlist. It helps me develop an atmosphere, as well as almost giving me a path to trace while writing.

Anyhoo, this jam comes up during a road scene where the dudes are going to their first big New York show. It’s on the radio while they’re in the car and then it takes us to a ROAD MONTAGE. I swear there aren’t too many montages in this movie. The movie’s only like 68% montage. Montage the movie. Montel the movie. Imagine if Montel were in this?

    The Indecision - Tire Me

This song is by a little Ska group from the UK called The Indecision, lead by Rikk Richardson who is incidentally the inspiration behind the character Squadman from the movie.

In the movie this song is used as a montage theme for when the guys first form their band and it goes into them practicing/recording songs and what have you. It’s a really funny scene.

Rikk’s always done amazing music, some more of which are featured in the movie, and you can go download their EP right now from the band’s Bandcamp, it’s FREE!

    DESTROY ALL SLACKERS
A feature-length animated comedy about a group of video game loving slackers who start a band as an excuse to party!
"Kail is a 22 year old dude who starts a band with his friends Spade, Dazz, Squadman, and CJ as a way to hang out, party, and most importantly, impress Molly, the girl he’s currently crushing on who’s a regular customer at the video store he works at. Things start to go wrong when Kail takes an offer from a greedy record producer who wants to make him into a superstar. Thinking he’s leaving behind a legacy that would make his late father proud, as well as impress the girl of his dreams, Kail leaves his friends behind in search of fame and fortune. Can the guys get their best friend and lead singer back? Should they even want him back?"
This week the Kickstarter for Destroy All Slackers goes up, we’re asking for $75,000 to complete the animation for the movie. The voices, music, sound, character designs, mostly everything is all done. We just need to finish the storyboards and ship them to the overseas studio to be animated.

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Sorry I haven’t been posting much, next week the Kickstarter should go up but that all depends on if we get that scene ready in time, it’s a very lengthy process, but y’know.

Anyhoo, regardless if the Kickstarter goes up next week or not I’m definitely gonna post the theatrical release poster so there’s that to look forward to.

    Stay gold, Slackers!

Kickstarter Goes Up Next Week Hopefully

Okay so updates have been a little sparse, but I’ve been working hard on putting together a Kickstarter project that explains what we’re doing, shows that we’re serious about what we’re doing and that we have an efficient way of making it happen, and keeps everything short and sweet while also having good, realistic incentives.

Kat already sent me the final poster design, which you can see as I’ve updated the website header, I’ll post the entire thing next week when the Kickstarter goes up, and the overseas studio is just about finished with the first scene. Once they send me that, the project goes up with the first scene as our lead video and a bonus storyboard workprint scene is included in the project.

I’ve set the goal at $75,000 and hopefully we’ll be able to meet our goal. We’re making a 90 minute feature film on a shoestring budget, so hopefully we’ll gain a lot of traction and be able to meet and exceed our goal.

Anyways, time to work on other screenplays. Stay gold, Slackers.
